T-shape is very important for everyone. It doesn’t matter whether you are a developer or not. It gives a lot of possibilities to develop yourself in many fields.
I regularly talk about it to the teams I am working with. As the result one of my Russian-speaking teams decided to develop not only technical skills, but also to improve the level of their English – it is also a hard skill. And now Daily Scrum in this team is held in English.
I find it to be a very good practice. I read that learning foreign languages increases the elasticity of our brain and its ability to encode information we receive. There is an opinion that the more foreign languages a person studies, the more effectively his/her brain reacts and processes the accumulated data. We train our brains – it’s crucial for all of us, isn’t it?
Besides it gives the team members possibility to read specialized literature in English and, having improved their spoken/written English, they will be able to communicate with developers from all over the world and exchange experiences, enrich their knowledge, and thereby bring great benefits to the employer and make a great contribution to the development of the company.
Everyone in this team has its own level of English. To make it easier to conduct the Daily Scrum, I gathered some materials and made a memo of questions for them.
