My homemade moussaka-style casserole is the perfect dinner!
Tired of the same old meals? Prepare this tender and aromatic eggplant casserole with ground meat.
Ingredients:
2 medium eggplants
0.5 kg ground meat (mine is beef and pork, with carrots and onions)
1 can of tomatoes in their own juice
Fresh or dried basil to taste
0.5 kg hard cheese
Salt to taste
Everyone’s baking dishes are different sizes, so you might need more or fewer ingredients.
The secret is simple:
- Fry the thinly sliced eggplants.
- Brown the ground meat until cooked through.
- Add the canned tomatoes (if whole, chop them into small pieces beforehand) to the meat.
- Add a little dried basil.
- If the meat wasn’t salted, you can add a little salt.
- Simmer for 5-7 minutes.
Then layer the ingredients in a baking dish (you can add a little milk or cream to the bottom first):
- Eggplants
- Ground meat
- Eggplants
- Cheese
My dish fits this many layers. Yours might fit more/fewer. The main thing: a generous layer of cheese on top.
After that, bake in a preheated oven to 180 degrees until the cheese forms a golden crust.

It turns out incredibly tender, hearty, and aromatic. Almost like in Greece.
